Parliament: Latest debates, bills and political moves

Parliament shapes the rules that affect your daily life — taxes, transport, safety and public services. On this page we collect clear updates on debates, votes and committee moves from parliaments across Africa and beyond. Expect quick summaries, links to full stories, and notes on how decisions could hit communities.

Why check this tag? Because parliament is where policy becomes law. Want to know who is pushing a new bill, which committee is grilling a minister, or how a ceasefire deal is being handled legally? We translate complex sessions into plain language so you can follow the outcomes that matter.

Recent stories here show how parliament links to everyday events. Read about Netanyahu’s ceasefire deal and the political fallout that could reshape party alliances. See the Guatemalan court order sending journalist Jose Rubén Zamora back to prison and the parliamentary questions it sparked about press freedom. Find local stories too—calls from public figures like Anele Mdoda asking government help with transport costs and regional responses to floods after the Alau Dam collapse.

We also track safety and oversight issues: coast warnings and disaster responses often trigger urgent debates and budget votes. For example, weather alerts on the Western Cape coast and major flooding in Maiduguri push lawmakers to act on emergency funding, evacuation plans, and infrastructure checks.

How to use this page: scan headlines for fast picks, open full reports for details, and use the tags to track ongoing stories. If a parliamentary committee is named in an article, we link to minutes and statements where available. Want voice or video? We flag interviews and recorded sessions when outlets post them.

What you'll find in our archive: debates on foreign policy and ceasefires, local budget fights, questions about press freedom, and oversight of public services. We cover the votes, key speeches, and the people behind decisions — MPs, ministers and committee chairs. Short summaries sit next to full reports so you can choose depth.

Marshall Dlamini Retains Parliament Seat Despite Suspended Sentence

Marshall Dlamini, the Secretary General of the EFF, has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment (suspended for five years) along with a R6,000 fine, yet he will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament. His conviction stems from a 2019 incident involving the assault of a police officer. Due to the fine inclusion, he remains eligible for his parliamentary role.
